From the Northern Lights to the Rock of Gibraltar, Europe’s adventures, history, parties and festivals are on everyone’s list. First-timers might want to see all the places you’ve heard about – The Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, the canals of Venice. If you’re planning on travelling there this year, here are a couple of our favourite places and things to do:
Hike Croatia, with its majestic mountains, white rivers and beautiful pine forests stretching for miles. If you’re going in winter, try skiing or snowboarding in the Pyrenees – less crowded than the Alps, plus you’re right between France and Spain for some winter cheer afterwards. If you’re into caving or potholing, there are great spots in France, Italy and Wales.
Check out our Adventure Travel Pack or Snow Pack add-ons for people who like a wilder ride – they can provide cover for many travel activities that mainstream travel insurance doesn’t.
July and August are the best times to go for the best music and arts festivals throughout Europe. There’s everything from house to heavy metal, pretty much anywhere you’re travelling. One of the most famous is Ibiza 123 - see heaps of VIP artists live, plus it’s great for celebrity-spotting. Or there’s Oktoberfest in Munich for the best celebration of beer in the world! If you’re going around the end of the year, head to Edinburgh for full-on Hogmanay fun.
Paris – the city of lights - shines in July. London is a must see, with its outstanding shopping, shows and after-work fun. Prague is a beautiful medieval time warp, but still has plenty of night life once you’re done sightseeing. Or spook yourself out at the Tower of London or Hampton Court, haunted by celebrities of the Tudor times.
WWOOFing – helping out by working on an organic farm. You can learn something for your home veggie bed, while giving back to the country you’re visiting. Imagine preparing and sharing dinner with friends in the kitchen of an old manor house in the Dordogne. Or learning pasta-making secrets from Nonna on a farm in Tuscany. It’s hard work, and you’ll be busy and tired – but it’s an experience like no other.
In all the fun of booking and planning, it’s easy to forget that things can go wrong. Consider travel insurance to cover you for certain unexpected dramas – then you can relax and have fun without worrying.
Rental vehicle excesses can mount into the thousands – but our travel insurance packs will provide cover you even if you’re under 25.
Pickpockets and bag slashers are everywhere in the major cities and they work in organized gangs, targeting people who look inexperienced. Don’t let it happen to you and make sure you have purchased policy coverage if you lose your stuff.
